When you are considering upgrading your boat, it is so easy to focus on power, communication and aesthetics. Whether it’s new LED boat signs, bathing platforms, or the latest vessel tracking and monitoring system. One thing that often gets overlooked, usually because it’s not something you want to think about, is sewage treatment. It is so important to have an efficient form of sewage treatment, both for your boat and the environment.

What are marine sewage treatment plants?

Sewage treatment plants allow you to treat and process grey and black water in a way that complies with international standards and regulations. Once it has been treated, it is safe to then return overboard to the sea.

What is black and grey water?

Black water is also called brown water or sewage and is the waste that comes from your boat toilets. It contains urine and faecal matter, along with disease-causing bacteria. Grey water comes from baths, sinks, and washing machines. It is easier to treat and process, as it carries fewer bacteria.

How do they work?

Disinfectant is used to treat the water, thus reducing the number of sediment particles. Once it meets international standards, the waste water can then be discharged directly overboard. Once the cycle has ended, the system is automatically washed through using fresh sea water.

What are the main advantages?

You don’t have to install a separate sludge tank in order to hold the waste on board.

The system is generally automatic, with the option for manual operation when needed.

It’s pollution free! The disinfectants used don’t release harmful chemicals into the environment.

Marine sewage treatment plants don’t take up a lot of space – they can be small enough to fit in a small engine room.
